natural light

despite the large building in our backyard, we get tremendous sun in the morning through to the afternoon. these are some new pillows that i've been working on. i am trying to dye less green, but it's my favorite and is proving harder to get away from than i thought.

p.s. leonard cohen last week, bob dylan tomorrow!

market garden

despite the rain and cold, i got out of bed at 7 a.m. yesterday and went down to the halifax farmer's market to buy plants for the garden. i really don't like to eat tomatoes, unless they're in ketchup or pasta sauce, but i love to grow them. i've grown them since i was small, and enjoyed bringing the ripe ones into the house for my dad, who would eat them right away, still sun-warm. i love the smell of the tomato plant as well, particularly when i'm sitting outside in the sun eating breakfast.

coleus have become a favorite of mine in the last few years. they come in such a range of vibrant colours, and i couldn't resist this 'saturn' variety, which can get up to three feet tall. the leaves are a wonderful velvety burgundy and chartreuse, though they look yellow with the strong sun hitting them.

this is gwilo, who has co-opted one of the new pouches as a pillow. he's a big fan of textiles.

spring housewares

there is the most glorious forsythia bush on agricola street here in halifax - it is one the walk between the studio and my house. when i was small there was a forsythia bush in front of my house, and i loved the profusion on yellow flowers followed by those great chartreuse leaves.

i am working on sorting out my housewares line, which has always been a somewhat casual thing that i initially started as gifts for my mom and friends without babies. i would like to introduce it at the xmas one of a kind show, but i have to submit images for jurying. here is a shot of freshly printed linen and cotton yardage that has been cut and is awaiting heatsetting and sewing into napkins and teatowels and pillows. i think that i'm crazy for sewing my own teatowels, but i just couldn't find blank ones that were exactly what I wanted.

mystery

i don't generally hit the 'view blog' button after i write a blog post, and so i had no idea that i wasn't actually publishing all of the posts that i've been writing during the last month.

ah well.

the term ended at nscad in a hurry, and there was a brief break during which time i was occupied with the wonderful halifax crafters show at the north street church. we were really busy organizing and promoting it, and we even had a few ladies drive in from new brunswick, as well as lee meszaros from ontario join us. i wish the name 'church of craft' wasn't already taken by a craft group, since it would fit so perfectly in our case.

classes started up again this week, though mine is the only class using the studio which is such a luxury after the unusually busy winter term.
